British artist Matthew Simmonds sculpts miniature structures in marble, reminiscent of ancient ruins and religious buildings.

Matthew Simmonds is an art historian and architectural stone sculptor based in Copenhagen, Denmark, who has used stone to create a series of exquisite stone carvings.

The carefully crafted architectural spaces present a complex picture of the inner world. So the changing perspectives and light also make the sculptures take on different faces.

Intricately carved from marble, Matthew Simmonds’ work is inspired by the artist’s academic background. Then he has been involved in the restoration of important historical monuments, notably Westminster Abbey and Ely Cathedral in the UK. And these tiny architectural sculptures create a new spatial perspective for us to re-examine these medieval grand buildings.

Inspired by traditional architectural language and philosophy, his work expresses themes of positive and negative. So the light and shadow between nature and human activity.
